St. Kitts is a true Caribbean vacation treasure, just off the "main" tourism highway, and is a gem waiting for the traveler to unlock her beautiful secrets and historic past. Officially known as St. Christopher, the island is laid out with a very distinctive shape often referred to as an oversized tennis racquet or cricket paddle with its rugged, slender handle trailing down and almost touching its sister island of Nevis. There are other distinctive features that quickly stand out to a visitor to St. Kitts. Three mountain ranges rise up in the center of the island playing host to constant rain clouds, swaying royal palm trees, mango tree groves, giant ferns and hardwood forests that provide hidden shelter to verdet monkeys. Sugar cane fields seem to roll down from the flanks of the green mountains toward the edge of the sea, gently sweeping past small villages that line the road and around the ruins of sugar mills and plantation Great Houses that dot the rolling countryside.
